Marmalade

January may be a slow, cold month but it does have one brilliant, sunny saving grace.... it is Seville orange season! I love the annual rythm that comes with kitchen rituals and for me January is all about making marmalade. I adore the bitterness of seville oranges, I like my marmalade tangy and the colour of glowing amber.

Just seeing the oranges in the markets, at the greengrocers' fills me with a promise of warm summer sunshine, still far away..........

So here is my bowl of Sevilles, lets get started!

I use Delia's recipe from "How to Cook 2" it has never failed me~ now whilst that is bubbling away for the next couple of hours what shall we do?

I should really deal with the post on the kitchen table, or crack on with that pile of ironing...yawn!

Actually I think I will show you the bowl that the oranges were in as I love it and I thought you might like a closer look too! It came from MIL and is a real favourite of mine.

Oh and I am really enjoying these tulips, I love it when they are almost over and they reveal their centres, hmm I spy the current edition of you know what! well perhaps just 5 minutes?

Much later

Yum, yum......sunshine on toast!

Hope you are all having a lovely weekend?

  5. You make it look so tempting. Maybe I should try and find some time to make some. We do like to finish off our breakfast with toast and marmalade, although today it was a fresh fruit salad instead.

  12. Hi Sarah, and thanks for your kind comments. Our marmalade maker is Ben, and he went so crazy on it last year (SIX different recipes, each one with different types of hand-cut shreds) that we have enough to last us another year! So next year we'll be joining you again in the great marmalade adventure.

  21. Ah yes, it's that time of year again, there's nothing quite like marmalade made from seville oranges (with a tot of whiskey, of course)! Lovely photos, it all looksf v attractive but where's the steamy kitchen windows and the red-faced cook, that's how my efforts look!

  27. I love marmalade especially home made. My mum and mum in law both get very excited at the prospect of seville oranges. I get excited at the prospect of eating it!

My mum brought a jar over last week with a beautiful bunch of purple tulips, my first of the year. Sadly they refused to open so I never got enjoy their middles. However I had the best breakfast yesterday full of orangey yummyness.

  31. Hiya Sarah,

I've never associated January with sun shiny oranges and marmalade though I'm liking your thought process.

No chunks in mine though - it's got to be shredless!

  35. Hi Sarah

I can just imagine the scent throughout the whole house when you made the marmalade, delicious smelling!

I would have to take the rind out though as I don't like it one bit. I always buy rindless but will have to have a go at making my own..

    Warm wishes

  41. Hi Sarah Jane,

I am just working on my yearly put up of my Great Grandmother's California marmalade recipe, which I will post next week.

In my garden I have blood oranges and navels, the latter being great for marmalade. My Grannie's recipe takes 3 days, but it is a lot about soaking and waiting. But it is good. I will give yours a try too.

    Lovely photos,
