Elizabethan

The second great Elizabethan age....or so some commentators are calling it and who am I to disagree?
It staggers me to think that parts of this house date back to the first Elizabethan age...woah!

And so we are bedecked and ready to flag wave in celebration of a magnificent 60 year reign.
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has reigned over this nation with great heart and unquestionable commitment for over half a century...A-M-A-Z-I-N-G.

When she was crowned MIL was a little girl and she stitched this sampler...
I really love it...all those stitches...my favourite part are those Beefeaters.
Last night I managed to catch the end of a programme showing the original Coronation footage...wow...what an event...so moving, I hadn't really appreciated it before, she was such a young woman, all this stretching ahead of her. Tonight the BBC plans to show a programme made by Prince Charles as his tribute to his mother...family films never shown before, the clips look amazing.

Much memorabilia is produced of course and lots of it is rather dubious but this treasure, fished out of a skip by Mr.Lane when MIL was moving, is a wonderful thing. Made in 1977 to celebrate the Silver Jubilee by "Tims Telescopic Views".A marvelous pink sleeve featuring the Golden Coach, inside a cardboard telescopic view of the carriage procession down the Mall with Buckingham Palace in the distance.
Quite difficult to capture it as all concertinas out, my photos don't do it justice but you get the idea?
Once again I adore all the Grenadier Guards and the Cavalry.

The most brilliant commemorative product I have seen thus far is the limited edition Marmite jars, re-branded as Ma'amite and all decked out in a Union Jack!
Liberty has been busy opening a new store in Stratford which is chock full of British Brilliance too.
In her Majesty's Coronation broadcast she said....
" I thank you all from a full heart. God bless you all."
60 years on and I thank you from a full heart, what an incredible woman you are.

  1. What a lovely post and such a beautiful sampler! What a gorgeous thing to treasure and display! I've just finished a Jubillee display on my dresser, i've been collecting old coronation, wedding and silver Jubillee mugs and other memorobillia over the last few months from jumble sales and charity shops, i've built up quite a collection for my little display. Have a lovely Jubillee Weekend x

  3. What a fabulous post, it has brought a tear to my very patriotic eye!

I love that sampler, it is a real treasure and your chosen photos are wonderful. I am so envious that youo live in a house which is part dated to the Elizabethan age. We are so lucky though to bear witness to another great monarch.

  5. Thank you for such a lovely post that sampler is wonderful and so glad that treasure was rescued from the skip.
What a great monarch she has been and there will be amazing celebrations this weekend. I found the programme by Prince Charles quite moving, you forget how young she was when she started her reign.

  8. Oh! I want MIL's sampler and I love that concertina viewing box, it's fabulous!
The 'Ma'amite' advertising cracks me up, a nice bit of design on a lot of cheeky levels.
So love the Australian Republican movement commenting that they wish she would stop visiting as it puts back the Republican argument by 20 years each time she pops in for a cuppa.
You really have to hand it to her- the hardest working woman out there.

  10. I think it's wonderful that the UK is celebrating the Queen's jubilee in such a big way ... it certainly is an amazing achievement and yes she was so young when she became Queen.

I LOVE the commemorative Ma'amite packaging!

  11. Elizabethan age - I do love that too.

You always think of the Victorians or Edwardians, but I never really consider the era we are in.

Have a fabulous filled weekend - fingers crossed for blue skies and a little warmth...if only to sit and sip Pimms with strawberries fizzing, plopped inside the glass until the moon comes out - it is June after all.

    take care,

    Nina xxx

It's so nice how the British can celebrate their own country. Being patriotic in a friendly and even humorous way is lovely!
